Tips To Learn English Faster
Use these tips to learn English more quickly as your starting point, and you will be able to master this great language in no time!
Read everything you encounter in English.
Classic literature, paperbacks, newspapers, websites, e-mails, your social media feed, cornflakes boxes: if you come across an English text somewhere, then read it. Why? Well, it's probably full of useful new words, but also with a lot of terms that you already know. This is how you move forward quickly: by encountering words that you have already learned, you get new examples of that word in a particular context, and it sticks better to your memory. Also, learning completely new words is incredibly important to build your vocabulary, especially in a language like English, with so many different words! But you will not only have to read, but you will also have to do something with it
Make active notes of new words.
This is rightly a classic tip because it works! If you learn something new, that word or phrase is often so exciting that it seems impossible to forget. But believe us: you cannot remember everything at once. So get used to having a funny notebook with you anytime, anywhere, or to use a tool like Evernote.
Talk to real people in real life.
What is a language if you don't communicate in it? We, humans, have naturally become experts over the past decade in the form of communication where you don't even have to open your mouth (thank you, WhatsApp!). But when it comes to the mark, you indeed remember a language much better if you practice it aloud instead of just reading or writing. Just imagine how many people say they "understand English but don't speak." For many potential English speakers, talking has become something that they are up against or even terrified of. Make sure you don't get that way. Contact native speakers to chat with, sign up for a course, or follow online classes.
Subscribe to (English-language) podcasts and YouTube channels
Do you like cabaret? Politics? Vlogs? Cook? Whatever your interests are: there is an English-language podcast or YouTube channel on every conceivable topic. Subscribe to a pair and listen or watch this while on your way to school or work. In the beginning, you will probably find the local accents difficult, but those who go on will quickly understand what is being said (and learn a lot of local vocabulary from a native speaker!).
Look at the stars
Improve your skills by choosing an English-language actor or singer that you like. Search online for interviews that he or she has given and view them. Look once to get an idea of what the conversation is about, and then again to write down interesting words and phrases that you hear. The street language, examples, humor, and anecdotes that are discussed are still a lot of new input to get started with.
Start with what you need.
The English learning process will probably go much faster if you always remind yourself why you started working. Are you going on an exchange? Then focus on the vocabulary you will need for your studies. Are you going to a meeting abroad? Practice ways to start conversations with other participants. Are you planning an interim year? Then travel, and tourism vocabulary will probably help you further. If you only decide to 'just learn English' and hope that you can get to know all the imaginable themes in one go, then you probably come home from a cold fair, and you get confused and tired. And the latter brings us to the following point:
Hold on even when things are not going well
If you feel like you can't get any further - something that every language student has at a given moment - don't tell yourself that you "can't understand English" or "you will never understand." In fact: ban these sentences from your mind! Such ideas make you no longer realize how much you are advancing, and you start to think that your dream of learning to speak good English is merely impossible. Instead, tell yourself: "I learn English and move forward every day," "It's not always easy, but it's worth it," "I'm so much better than six months ago" and other comments that remind yourself of how enormously well things are going.
